Inspired by the book Amazon Beaming by Petru Popescu,Richard Katz transports us to the humid depths of the Amazon, his storytelling served by the enveloping presence of innovative binaural 3D audio technology. The Encounter, directed by Simon McBurney,comes to Sydney Festival fresh from Broadway.

In 1969, National Geographic photographer Loren McIntyre became lost in a remote part of the Brazilian rainforest while searching for the Mayoruna people. His encounter was to test his perception of the world, bringing the limits of human consciousness into startling focus. As McIntyre’s mesmerizing tale reaches its climax, this extraordinary performance asks some of the most urgent questions of today: about how we live and what we believe to be true.

Threading scenes of his own life with details of McIntyre’s journey, Richard Katz incorporates objects and sound effects into this solo performance to evoke an intimate and shifting rainforest landscape. Transmitted direct to the audience through provided headphones, the show’s groundbreaking sound design plugs into the power of the imagination, questioning our perceptions of time, communication and our own consciousness.

For the third instalment of Bass Coast TV, we got to spend some time catching up with a fan favourite at the festival; Longwalkshortdock a.k.a LWSD! Filmed in two pieces, we spent some time in LWSD's studio while he played around with all his synth toys and gave us some insight to what it's like being in his studio. In the second part we caught up with LWSD after his performance to ask him about how he enjoyed his Bass Coast this past year. Finding him is not the most trying of tasks; one need simply walk to the nearest fraternity house, bar, pub, club, college dorm, or house to find one. His eating habits are not yet completely known or understood, but he is frequently seen rejecting the contents of his stomach into vases, urns, toilets, top-loading washing machines, priceless heirlooms, and other receptacles. This demonstrates his inability to recognize the sentimental or emotional value of objects. He is sometimes hairy, sometimes quite close-shaven, but will almost always cover his head with a hat of some kind, even in the summer where temperatures in his habitat reach in excess of eighty degrees Fahrenheit. His language skills are simpler than that of the ordinary human, often using sounds such as "bro", "cash", "broad", and "home skillet" that have no meaning to a true human being. Despite his cultural deficiencies, the Party Animal often lives quite a luxurious lifestyle. They are known to rely on their parents for protection and sustenance until, on average, they reach the age of 25 and can no longer rely on their parents stability of mind for food and money. A captive Party Animal will "imprint" himself on the first female, or "broad" in his primitive language, that he sees. The function of this is not known, as he tends to dismiss her advances in favor of other members of her pack. In the wild, Party Animals will seek out the sick, weak, or most intoxicated of females for his mate. Party Animals do not mate for life; they tend to drift from female to female. Their semen is almost totally inert from excessive alcoholism and drug use, so the male Party Animal must spread his genetic material into as many females as possible to ensure the survival of his species. The Party Animal culture is something of a strange one. Their principle forms of liquid sustenance are Busch Light, Icehouse, Jagermeister (a peculiar beverage which is made by distilling the sweat of nerds and mixing it with rat poison), Smirnoff, and Mike's Hard Lemonade. The combination of these drinks can result in severe headaches, sensitivity to light and sound, impaired sexual performance, increased sexual desire, loss of coordination, predilection for wearing lamp shades, slurred speech, increased desire to dance, decreased dancing performance, violent tendencies, and violent episodes of nausea culminating in the forceful expulsion of partially digested food ("Blowing Chunks"). To this day, it is unknown exactly why the Party Animal chooses to gorge himself on such a volatile mixture of chemicals when consuming moderate amounts results in a much more pleasant experience overall, including feelings of intense happiness, love for all living things, increased tactile function, increased enunciation, and no nasty after-effects.

One part of the attire covers the breasts and the other part covers the crotch and part of or the entire buttocks, leaving an uncovered area between the two. Merriam--Webster describes the bikini as "a woman's scanty two-piece bathing suit" or "a man's brief swimsuit". It is often worn in hot weather, while swimming or sunbathing. The shapes of both parts of a bikini resemble women's underwear, and the lower part can range from revealing thong or g-string to briefs. While two-piece bathing suits had been worn on the beach before, the modern bikini was invented by French engineer Louis Réard in 1946. He named it after Bikini Atoll in the Pacific, the site of the Operation Crossroads nuclear weapon tests in July that year. The bikini is perhaps the most popular female beachwear around the globe, according to French fashion historian Olivier Saillard due to "the power of women, and not the power of fashion". As he explains, "The emancipation of swimwear has always been linked to the emancipation of women. By the mid 2000s, bikinis had become a $811 million business annually, according to the NPD Group, a consumer and retail information company. The bikini has boosted spin-off services like bikini waxing and the sun tanning industries Predecessors of the bikini date to antiquity, in Çatalhöyük and the Greco-Roman world. Art dating from the Diocletian period (286--305 AD) in Villa Romana del Casale, Sicily depicts women in garments resembling bikinis in mosaics on the floor. The images of ten women, dubbed the "Bikini Girls", exercising in clothing that would pass as bikinis today are the most replicated mosaic among the 37 million colored tiles at the site. Archeological finds, particularly in Pompeii, show the Roman goddess Venus wearing a bikini. A statue of Venus in a bikini was found in a cupboard in the southwest corner in Casa della Venere, others were found in the front hall. A statue of Venus was recovered from the tablinum of the House of Julia Felix, and another from an atrium at the garden at Via Dell'Abbondanza. The groundwork for the modern bikini began to be laid in 1907, when Australian swimmer and performer Annette Kellerman was arrested on a Boston beach for wearing a form-fitting one-piece swimsuit, which became an accepted beach attire for women by 1910. In 1913, inspired by the introduction of women into Olympic swimming, designer Carl Jantzen made the first functional two-piece swimwear, a close-fitting one-piece with shorts on the bottom and short sleeves on top. By the 1930s, necklines plunged at the back, sleeves disappeared and sides were cut away. Hollywood endorsed the new glamour with films such as Neptune's Daughter in which Esther Williams wore provocatively named costumes such as "Double Entendre" and "Honey Child". With new materials like latex and nylon, by 1934 the swimsuit started hugging the body and had shoulder straps to lower for tanning. By the early 1940s two-piece swimsuits were frequent on American beaches. Hollywood stars such as Ava Gardner, Rita Hayworth and Lana Turner tried similar swimwear or beachwear. Pin ups of Hayworth and Esther Williams in the costume were widely distributed. Finally, the modern bikini was introduced by French engineer Louis Réard and fashion designer Jacques Heim in Paris in 1946. Réard was a car engineer but by 1946 he was running his mother's lingerie boutique near Les Folies Bergères in Paris. Heim was working on a new kind of beach costume. It comprised two pieces, the bottom large enough to cover its wearer's navel. In May 1946, he advertised the bathing suit, known as the "Atome," as the world's "smallest bathing suit". Réard named his swimsuit the "bikini", taking the name from the Bikini Atoll, one of a series of islands in the South Pacific where testing on the new atomic bomb was occurring that summer. Historians assume Reard termed his swimsuit the "bikini" because he believed its revealing style would create reactions among people similar to those created by America's atomic bomb in Japan just one summer earlier.
